LI.FI: Unlocking the power of data with Moss’ API

API calls replacing manual reconciliation

For most finance teams, the data lives in the platform. For LI.FI, that was never going to be enough.

LI.FI is a Berlin-based crypto infrastructure company building the middleware layer that connects fragmented blockchain ecosystems. With over 120 people and a team that moves fast, their approach to finance is the same as their approach to technology: automate what can be automated, connect what can be connected, and focus human attention where it actually matters.

When LI.FI started using Moss, they quickly saw an opportunity that went beyond expense management. With API access, they could pull their financial data out of the platform and put it to work.

"We've really been focusing on making Moss as data-rich as possible," explains William Lindsay, Head of Finance at LI.FI. "Making sure that all of our expenditure is being tracked and logged in Moss means the output via the API is so much more powerful."

From CSV exports to live data in AI workflows

Before API access, LI.FI’s data workflows looked like those of most finance teams. They revolved around repetitive CSV exports and manual uploads, and there was no quick way to connect Moss data to other systems in real time. The data was there. What was missing was a live connection to act on it.

"It was super restrictive," William recalls. "You couldn't have it present in agentic workflows. 

The LI-FI team consumes the Moss API via an MCP connection between Moss and Claude, giving them live access to all transaction and invoice data directly within their AI environment. Analysis that would previously have required downloading, cleaning and uploading files could now happen instantly, with data that was always up to date.

Autonomous agents powered by live financial data

The team quickly moved beyond data analysis into operational automation. A billing agent now monitors LI.FI's invoice mailbox, handling hundreds of incoming documents per day.

Using the Moss API, the agent cross-references each incoming document against recent card transactions to classify it as a receipt or invoice and route it correctly to Moss. It then performs full expense account classification, checks VAT and reverse-charge treatment, verifies the vendor against the Moss supplier record, validates cost-centre assignments, and splits large invoices by analysing line items. The results are posted as structured, severity-flagged summaries to a dedicated Slack channel for the finance team to review.

The time impact has been significant. "Before, we were spending a couple of days over the course of a month sorting and forwarding things to the right place," William says. "It's now maybe down to an hour."

A separate workflow uses the Moss API alongside the API from LI.FI's freelancer invoicing platform to verify that every invoice has been correctly transferred into Moss. What was previously a manual cross-check across two platforms now runs in two API calls.

Controlling and reporting, with far more granularity

Beyond automation, the API has changed how LI.FI approaches financial analysis and controlling. Weekly spend reviews, monthly cost centre checks and bespoke budget reports for individual teams are now generated by pulling Moss data directly into Claude and passing it through custom analytical frameworks.

"There are certain reports that Moss doesn't offer out of the box," William acknowledges, "but within Claude you can give it everything you want and immediately it's there."

The team maintains a human in the loop for higher-stakes workflows, with the API operating in read-only mode for now. "We're able to use AI and the Moss API where the end result is quantifiable and we can trust the output," William explains. "There are certain things where you have to be a little more careful, and we make sure we differentiate between the two."

LI.FI has had API access for roughly a month. In that time they've built multiple live workflows, automated a significant portion of their invoice processing, and are already planning flash financial reports, conference spend analysis, and deeper cross-system integrations.

For William, the real value is in what happens when data stops living in silos. "Every finance team is using a lot of different platforms. Being able to break those silos down, connect the data sets together, and then feed that through a rules-based framework leads to massive gains. That's the most important thing."
